Like a massage, with Reiki you lay on a table fully clothed, allowing your entire body to relax. The practitioner places their hands over different parts of your head and body to enable the Prana (energy) to flow into the body. Reiki is a hands-off approach.

1) Chronic Pain , especially the kind that lasts for three months or more. The thing about chronic pain is the source of the pain isn’t always where you feel it. Common habits can lead to discomfort, including:

  • Carrying a bag or purse on the same shoulder
  • Poor posture from sitting too long at a desk or in a car
  • Favoring one hip while standing
  • Carrying a child on one hip

2) Inflammation is the body’s response to injury or harmful stimuli, showing up as pain, swelling, heat, redness, or loss of function. If ignored, inflammation can lead to disease. Common triggers include:

  • Poor diet
  • Lack of exercise
  • Chronic stress
  • Poor sleep
  • Toxins (alcohol, drugs, tobacco)

3) Stress activates the body’s fight-or-flight response, releasing the hormone cortisol. When stress becomes chronic, it keeps the body in a heightened state, leading to muscle pain, especially in the neck, shoulders, and back. It can also cause TMJ, gut issues, headaches, increased pain sensitivity, sleep problems, and difficulty breathing.

4) Emotional Health , which can also affect your physical health. Yoga therapy can help improve feelings of:

  • Sadness and depression which can lead to fatigue, digestive problems, and weakened immunity.
  • Anger disrupts digestion and increases the risk of heart disease and liver issues.
  • Anxiety can cause digestive issues, nausea, and sleep disturbances, and in severe cases, panic attacks.

Yoga therapy can be highly beneficial for recovery from injury, illness, or surgery because it focuses on gentle, mindful movements, breath work, and body awareness to promote healing. Sometimes, our bodies develop guarding behaviors — natural protective patterns where you subconsciously tense up to avoid pain. For example, if you hurt your lower back, you might unintentionally tense your shoulders and neck to restrict movement. While this helps protect the injured area, it can lead to pain in other parts of the body, difficulty breathing, and added stress.

Yoga therapy is highly adaptable, meaning it can be tailored to your specific needs and abilities, whether you’re recovering from a surgery, managing chronic illness, or rehabilitating after an injury. Working with a qualified yoga therapist ensures that movements and postures are safe and effective for your recovery.

Here's why Yoga Therapy is effective for those recovering from injury, illness, and post-surgery:

  • Improves Mobility & Flexibility: Yoga helps restore range of motion by gently stretching and mobilizing the affected areas, reducing stiffness and increasing flexibility.
  • Strengthens the Body: Post-injury or surgery, it's important to rebuild strength. Yoga helps activate and strengthen muscles, improving stability and preventing future injuries. Post-surgery, yoga can help safely reintroduce movement and rebuild muscle tone.
  • Reduces Scar Tissue & Tension: Specific yoga postures can help break down scar tissue, improve circulation, and reduce tightness, which can alleviate pain and discomfort caused by old injuries or surgical scars.
  • Enhances Circulation & Healing: Breath-focused practices and movement in yoga stimulate blood flow, which aids in the delivery of nutrients to tissues, speeding up recovery and reducing inflammation. Gentle yoga postures help increase blood flow to injured or healing areas, promoting faster recovery.
  • Balances the Nervous System: Yoga's emphasis on deep breathing and relaxation helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest), reducing stress and promoting healing by calming the body’s stress response.
  • Promotes Mental Well-being: Dealing with injury, illness, or surgery can be mentally challenging. Yoga therapy supports emotional recovery by helping you stay focused, reduce anxiety, and improve overall mood.
  • Customizable & Gentle: Yoga therapy can be tailored to your specific condition, ensuring the practice is safe and effective. Whether you’re recovering from surgery or managing chronic pain, the practice can be adjusted to your needs.
  • Teaches Awareness & Prevents Re-injury: Yoga encourages body awareness, which can help you recognize areas of tension or imbalances before they lead to further injury. It also promotes proper alignment, reducing the risk of re-injury as you return to activity.

Yes, yoga is safe and can be beneficial for pregnant women, seniors, and individuals with injuries when practiced appropriately and under professional guidance. However, modifications and careful attention to individual needs are essential for safety.

Here’s how yoga can support each group:

YOGA FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

Yoga during pregnancy can offer numerous benefits, including improved flexibility, strength, and relaxation. It helps manage stress, reduce pregnancy-related discomforts (like back pain), and improve circulation. Prenatal yoga is specifically designed to accommodate the changes in a woman's body, focusing on gentle movements, breathing techniques, and relaxation to support both mother and baby. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting a yoga practice during pregnancy.

YOGA FOR SENIORS
For older adults, yoga is an excellent way to maintain or improve flexibility, balance, and strength. Gentle yoga can reduce the risk of falls, improve joint health, and enhance overall mobility. By focusing on slow, controlled movements and deep breathing, yoga helps seniors manage stress, anxiety, and improve mental clarity. Modifications can be made to accommodate limited mobility or existing health conditions, ensuring a safe practice tailored to the individual's needs.

YOGA FOR THE INJURED OR POST-SURGERY

Yoga can be highly effective for recovery from injury, provided it's practiced carefully. It promotes circulation, reduces stiffness, and helps rebuild strength and flexibility in a safe and controlled manner. Therapeutic yoga is designed for individuals recovering from injury or managing chronic pain, with gentle stretches and postures to aid healing. Working with a certified yoga therapist or instructor who understands the limitations and needs of an injured body is crucial for avoiding further injury and promoting recovery.
